In the webster's dictionary, health is define as the condition of being sound in body, mind or spirit or freedom from physical disease or pain. Nutrition, on the other hand, refers to the science that deals with all the various factors of which food is composed and the way in which proper nourishment is brought about. Health and nutrition are like Siamese twins that go together. A person can not be healthy, unless he/she is proper nourished.
We need nutrients to live and we eat food to be able to get these nutrients. There are many food choices and there are also reasons for choosing them. Each of this choices contributes to our total nutrient intake that brings about good nutrition. Nutrients provide energy, contribute to structure, and regulate biological processes. There are also other required substances but are considered nonessential because they can be manufactured by the body in sufficient amounts.
In cells, protein is an integral part of the cell membrane,the cytoplasm, and the organelles. The skin, hair and muscles are made up largely of protein. The bones and teeth are made up of minerals fixed in a protein framework. If your diet lacks of protein these structures may breakdown. The muscles become smaller, the skin becomes inelastic, and the hair becomes thin and can be easily be pulled out from the roots.
Good nutrition and its maintenance is basic to health. Most people are concerned with food taken daily without any regard for practices or habits, which may influence good health. The choice of food involves a wide selection on the kind and amount that the body should take. It is essential that people should understand that the nutrients in food must be utilized to be able to get maximum nutritional benefits.
